Paris is reeling from a progression of fierce terrorist assaults, yet these vintage photos are an indication of the city's persisting soul and how it has risen sparkling from dim times before.

The pictures were all taken in 1923 and show how Paris sprung to life after World War I, when it was shelled and endured nourishment deficiencies. In the Roaring Twenties the city turned into a photo of music, style and amusement fuelled by a relentless vitality.

After the hardship of World War 1, France yearned for good cheer. Pre-war qualities were rejected bringing forth the energetic time of the flapper, craftsmanship deco, the first noiseless films and the design of Coco Chanel.

The twenties were a period that had a place with specialists and authors, the most prominent city occupants being Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Picasso and James Joyce - so gigantic was the impact of these identities that a large number of the frequented bistros still live off the legacy today.

Furthermore, industry was experiencing change - autos started to impart the Parisian boulevards to the steed pulled trucks transporting both merchandise and visitors.

Picture taker Jules Gervais-Courtellemont set out to catch the beautiful city encountering this one of a kind time of both development and hopefulness post-war.
